Matt Ellentuck's newsletter has a paid subscription option now!
Hi friends, it’s me, Matt Ellentuck.
Starting today, Here’s Basketball has a paid subscription option!
I’ve held off on going paid, but this week I have been completely overwhelmed with the support you all have given the newsletter… and with the WNBA season about to start up, I think it’s time. (Also, it’s nuts, but there are more than 1,350 of you receiving my dumb-as-hell words. That includes more than 200 new people in the last 48 hours! Hi, new friends, I hope you picked your team.)
I don’t like the business part of running a newsletter. It isn’t fun. It’s awkward to try to value your own writing, and paywalling this project has never been something I’ve been interested in doing… especially since I’m trying to grow the fanbase around women’s basketball. Hell, I’m writing a 5-part series trying to get more people watching as we speak.
But a few people have reached out about paying for my work, and someone even went ahead and sent me money on Venmo, which was wildly nice. For those new to my writing, I lost my full-time job last month at SB Nation, where I was the national website’s lead WNBA reporter for the last four years. Anyway, I think it’s time I give the option for people to pay for what I write… though I want to clarify that it is *not* a necessity to keep reading my work.
A subscription to Here’s Basketball costs $7 per month. Those $7 will give you access to everything I write, including WNBA fantasy and daily fantasy basketball pieces that I will paywall. It will also give you any additional content I may decide to add as the season goes on. (It’s gonna be a weird one, I think we’re all figuring out how to cover it from a distance.)
I’m going to try my hardest to not paywall most of the other WNBA pieces I write in the opening weeks, as prospective fans find out about all the hype and hopefully join the bandwagon. But I may change my mind at some point. The next step for me is to paywall at least one thing that I write per week — but again, everything on this Earth is one big ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ at the moment, and this newsletter is no different. I’ll keep everyone updated.
My hope is that I will also be able take whatever money I can from this newsletter and pay others who are covering women’s sports. We’re a small group, and I want to help more voices stay in the game.
If you’re interested in subscribing, here’s that link:
So that’s what’s happening on this here newsletter. If $7 per month is out of your price range, or you’d like to wait and see if it’s something you’d be willing to pay for, I get it! You’ll still get free content from me, which I hope you’ll continue to share.
Thanks for reading! Part 3 of the WNBA Beginner’s Guide will be out soon.
Stay safe, friends.
